What is L-Theanine?

First discovered as a constituent of green tea leaves  ( Camellia sinensis)  in 1949, L-Theanine is an amino acid  analogue  of the proteinogenic amino acids   L-glutamate  and  L-glutamine. L-Theanine is considered a nondietary amino acid, not unlike  L-Ornithine  or L-Citrulline. L-Theanine is primarily known for its ability to promote relaxation without causing sleep and is often paired with Caffeine. It is thought that L-Theanine helps balance the negative effects of Caffeine that some people experience. Together, L-theanine and Caffeine are considered one of the most commonly used and popular nootropic stack options that may promote faster reaction time, numeric working memory reaction time and improved sentence verification accuracy.

One study conducted by Unilever was able to confirm that even small amounts of L-Theanine were able to promote alpha wave production as indicated on an EEG (Electroencephalography).
